Chocolate Cake

  • 2/3 cup shortening (Crisco)
  • 1 2/3 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 2/3 cup cocoa
  • 1 1/3 cup water
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 ¼ tsp baking soda
  • 1/3 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt


  • 2 egg whites
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 2 2/3 Tbsp water
  • 1/3 cup corn syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Oven 350°

Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

Combine shortening and sugar with mixer until fluffy.    Beat in eggs until combined.

Combine dry ingredients:   cocoa, flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt.  In another bowl, combine water and vanilla.

Alternate adding dry ingredients and water/vanilla to the sugar mixture, ending with the dry ingredients.

Pour into prepared pans and bake 30-35 minutes.

To make frosting, beat 2 egg whites until stiff; set aside. Cook sugar, water, and corn syrup until it spins a thread. Add to egg whites, then add 1 tsp vanilla. Spread over cooled cake.
